You can start your journey in Denia, the capital of the Costa
Blanca, known for its wonderful beaches, and also for its festivities,
which we must underline “bous a la mar” a celebration
where the braveness of both bull, man and sea are the main attractions.
You can then drive over the natural wildlife Park of Montgó
with its stunning views to the walled town of Javea, with a full
calendar of fiestas, three kings parade (January), carnival parade
(February), sardines funeral (March), hogueras (June),……
It´s not possible to talk about Valencia without mentioning
“Las Fallas” between the 15th – 19th March,
an event where people come from all over the world to admire these
magnificent papier-mâché statues that are placed
all over the city.
It
is a fiesta which is also renowned for its “Mascleta”
(bangers in the main square), firework displays, and then the
burning of the papier-mâché statues, where the main
attraction is the fire. These fiestas have been declared an International
Tourist Attraction.
If you take the route to Alicante, you will come to the town
of Altea. Its tranquil and serene setting has made it a haven
for painters and craftsmen, with their shops dotted along the
streets of the old town.
Alicante
is the land of fiestas and traditions. One of the biggest celebrations
is the Carnaval parade at the end of February, where the people
of the city dress-up and fill the streets up with lights, colour
and laughter.
The biggest fiesta is on the 24th June, the night of San Juan,
a festivity where the protagonists are effigies made of papier-mâché,
and are then burnt.
Another place that should be included in the itinerary is Orba,
a small typical Spanish village, 18 km inland from Denia, where
you can buy presents or souvenirs for the family or friends, as
it is the biggest pottery and ceramic producer on the Costa Blanca.
Along this same route on the Costa Blanca you can relax and enjoy
the exquisite scenery over the orange groves in Rafol de Almunia,
a small Spanish village of 400 inhabitants.
And last but not least, a must to visit is the famous “Rastro”
(Antique fair) held every Saturday morning in Jalon, where you
can also taste the famous wines and “Mistela” (sweet
wines) of this region.
